Laws of the state
One of the things that a lot of people neglect to properly learn when they move to a new state is the law. Because it is the same country, a lot of people assume that all of the laws will be the same. For the most part they will be. However, this means that the ones that aren't will catch you out even more. The last thing you want is to get in trouble with the law for something that you didn't even know wasn't legal. A clear example of a difference in laws is the quarantine laws of Western Australia. Because of all of its native wildlife, Western Australia restricts a lot of different items from entering the state. Unlike a lot of laws that you could probably get away with learning a while after your move, the quarantine laws are laws that you will need to know before you even enter the state. This illustrates just how important it is that you learn what legal differences there are between your current state and your new state.

Weather
Although a place having different weather may seem insignificant, in some cases it could be detrimental to your health. Especially in cases where you are moving between places with vastly different weathers, not being prepared can be problematic. As an example, if your new state is particularly hot, it is important that you take note of this. This not only means making sure that you have appropriate clothing to deal with the heat, it also means being aware that you may need to be drinking more water than you were previously. Not taking this into account can lead to being dehydrated, as well as a number of other heat related health problems. Obviously, this is only one example of how the weather can be important as a thing to prepare for. On top of this, there are a large number of other ways in which poor weather preparation can be problematic.
Infrastructure
Learning about the infrastructure that is in place within the state can be very useful. One of the biggest things that you may want to learn about is the public transport. Knowing how the public transport in the state that you are moving to compares to your current state will help you to plan how you are going to be getting around a lot of the time. If you are coming from a place with good public transport infrastructure, then you may be used to making use of this. When you are used to making use of public transport, you will want to make sure that you don't get caught out by the lack of it in a new place. If you are not used to driving, you may want to get yourself in practice before your move. There are other examples of infrastructure that you will want to learn about before your move, but the general rule stays the same. You will want to prepare yourself for any significant differences.
