6 Tips for Moving House with Pets

Taking your pets to a new environment can be daunting. Moving house is stressful enough and this stress can rub off onto your pets. You have the added advantage of knowing what's going on, however, pets can be confused by the whole process. Here are 6 tips to make the moving procedure as stress-free as possible for your pet.

1. Plan Ahead

It's important to plan moving day in advance. You may wish to put your pet into a boarding kennel. Or you can designate one person in the family to take care of your pet for the day to reassure them with familiarity. If one person is responsible for your companion this also ensures that they're not lost during the move. You know your pet best and what will work best for them. Organise this prior to moving day to give you one less thing to think about on the actual day.

2. Turn to Medicinal Solutions

Should you suspect your pet may become distressed during the move you may consider trying chemical assistance. There are products available for cats and dogs which artificially creates pheromones. This helps relax your animal and make the move a positive experience for them. If your pet is opposed to car travel a sedative might be more advisable.

3. Consider Your Veterinary Options

If you're moving far away you will need to change vets. It's best to research beforehand which vet you would like to transfer your pet to. Organise for your animal's medical records to be relocated to the new vet practice. This makes it easier if you should need to see a vet. Fleas can be a problem when moving to a new home as the previous owner's pet or local wildlife may harbour them. Ensuring your pet receives treatment for this is fundamental.

4. Update Your Pet's Details

Whilst you are updating all of your details remember to update your pets as well. Make sure your pet's ID tag has your new details and update contact details for their microchip. Your companion is most likely to get lost in the first few weeks of living in a new neighbourhood so keeping details up to date is crucial.

5. The Car Ride

A long car journey will require multiple stops for your pet's toileting, eating and exercising habits. It's also important to keep your animal cool. Fish and other aquatic life struggle with being moved. Your local pet store can put pure oxygen in the water to assist with the move. A battery operated aerator can help with the change in environment, particularly temperature.

6. Comfort Your Pet

Favourite toys, blankets and treats can all help in comforting your pet along the journey. When you stop, comfort your companion with attention and patting. Continue providing this security when you've reached your new home to help your animal settle in. If you need to leave your pet alone provide clothes that have your scent on them to comfort them.
