Moving to a New Apartment: Avoiding Lost Items

Moving to a new apartment is a big event. Getting to your new apartment can feel very exciting. Oftentimes, however, this excitement can be overshadowed when you realise that you have left something behind. This is especially dispiriting when you are moving over a long distance. To ensure that you don't forget anything when moving home, here's what you need to know.

What to leave behind

First, it is worth clarifying that such things must be decided on a case by case basis. The topic of what should be left needs to be discussed with all relevant parties (E.g. the next tenants and your landlord).

The only things that should always be left are things such as keys and documents pertaining to the residence. Everything else will depend on your circumstances. If you want to get rid of any of your belongings, you will either need to discuss this with the relevant parties or get rid of it yourself.

The first thing to agree on is communications devices. Discuss in advance whether you will leave things such as a modem or a landline phone. Often, these turn out to be unnecessary after the move, as they are selected individually for each home. At the same time, some buyers often regard such things as an integral part of the purchased apartment.

Also, discuss large appliances. During transport, such things can often get damaged becoming unusable. At the same time, the next tenant may be very happy with the purchase of a dishwasher or refrigerator in addition to the apartment. You will also save space in the truck which in turn will save you money. On the other hand, the next tenants may not want to spend a few days taking out your old things.

Planning

The most important thing to do to make your move easier is to plan in advance. Many people leave a lot of the work until the last minute. This is the most common cause of forgotten items. If you start preparing for the move at least two months in advance, you can avoid any problems.

The main advice that trucking firms give customers is to label boxes properly when packing. If you make a complete list of the contents of each box, then after the move, unpacking will be a lot quicker and it will be a lot easier to find anything that you may be looking for.
