Sorting your Food Out When Moving House

When you move house, you will inevitably have food or drinks that you will have to do something with. The question of what to do with it does not have a simple answer, especially if you don't want to waste food. Of course you could throw it all out, but that is a waste of food and a waste of money. This article is designed to help you to develop strategies to deal with your food when you move home.

Sort your Food

The first thing that you will need to do before anything else is take inventory of the food that you have. You will need to work out what foods are perishable, what foods need to be kept cold, as well as if any other foods may have issues surviving the move. When you are doing this, you will want to be thinking about how far the food will have to travel. You will also want to be considering how old the food is, as this will in large part determine whether the food will survive the move. The reason that you have to do this first is that it will determine what you are going to do with your food.

Plan your Food

One of the strategies that you can employ to deal with your food is to plan all of your meals leading up to the move. By doing this, you will be able to buy exactly what you will need and no more. If done properly, this should mean that you will run out of food on the day of your move. This means that you will not have to dispose of any food on the day of your move in order to clear your fridge and freezer. The only downside to this is that it requires quite a lot of forethought as not only will you have to plan for the time leading up to the move, you will also have to make sure that you don't have food left from before the planned period. The good news is that even if you do have some, you will still be reducing waste by a lot.

Transport the Food

If you are only moving a short distance, it may be viable for you to take your food with you, including the bits that may be frozen. To do this you will need a chilly bin or other cold storage container to prevent the frozen food from thawing for as long as possible. Once you have removed the food from the fridge or freezer, you are on a timer. You will need to transport the food and put it in a fridge or freezer as soon as possible, so as to ensure that it doesn't thaw or go off. Because of this, it is best to leave packing the frozens until as late as you are able to.

Order Food

One other strategy that could work to reduce waste when moving home is to stop buying more food well before your move. After you do this, you will want to exhaust all of your food to get rid of it. Now that you have all of your food cleared out, you will have to order takeaways or dine in at a restaurant. If your goal is to save money rather than to reduce food waste, this is not a viable strategy. Ordering food is often significantly more expensive than making food yourself. This makes this plan very expensive. If your goal is to reduce food waste or to have less work to do on your move day in clearing out food, this is definitely one way you could do it.
