The level of integration
The first thing that you will want to do is figure out how involved you want to be with your neighbours. As nice as it is to meet new people and make friends with those living next to you, it is not a requirement if it is not something that you feel comfortable with. Perhaps you just want to be on the level where you know each other's names and can say hello whenever you see each other or maybe you want to make friends with your neighbours and participate in social events. Whatever the case, the first step is to know what you want. Depending on what you want the steps that you will take will be very different.

Introduce yourself
When you first move in you may want to go over to your neighbours houses and introduce yourself and perhaps even your family. This will establish yourself as someone who is willing to interact with people so if this is not what you want then you may want to avoid doing this. Some neighbours may take the initiative and introduce themselves to you first. This is good as this can give you an indication that these people are interested in forming a neighbourly relationship with you.
Invite your neighbours over
If you want to participate in social events with people in the neighbourhood then inviting people from the neighbourhood over is an effective way to signal this. The easiest option is a barbeque or other dinner. Out of the various dinner options, a barbeque is the best option. This is for a number of reasons. Firstly, you are in an open space when cooking and it takes relatively little attention meaning you can socialise while cooking. It is also a very easy method of cooking a lot of food as well as a fairly large variety of food. Having people over for dinner can be very casual and is a very easy thing to leave making it ideal for a first social event. Speaking to and learning about your neighbours is key if you want to build any sort of lasting friendship.
Maintain the outside of your home
It is important that you keep the outside of your home, such as a lawn, in a presentable state. IF your neighbours can see that you are looking after your new home you will come across as a presentable and well organised person. This will make your neighbours more likely to want to interact with you as they will see you in a better light.
