Packing a seperate bag
A few days before the move, you will already be at the stage where you are packing most of your belongings. At this point, you will want to pack most of the things that you want to have with you on the day of the move into a bag. This will include things such as some clothes, shoes and toiletries that will need to have access to once the move starts. The point of packing these seperately is that everything else will be on the moving truck.

Use up your food
In the days leading up to the move, you will want to use up as much of your food as possible. If you are buying any more food during this time, you will want to limit it as much as possible. There are two reasons for doing this. Firstly, any food that needs to be in a refridgerator or freezer is at risk of thawing or going off during the move. Secondly, any food that you do take with you to the new home will need to be packed and transported. This creates unnecessary work for you during your move.
Packaging services
Many people don't know that some moving companies also offer packaging services. If you are choosing to do this, you will want to organise it beforehand. If you leave it until the last minute, it may not be possible. Even if you are able to pack things yourself, there are advantages to getting it done for you. Not only will it save time, if you are getting your fragile belongings packed for you, these items are less likely to break in the hands of professionals. Even if something were to happen, you would not have to pay for it.
Packing cables
When you are packing your appliances, you will need to take care in packing the cables. If you were to pack all of the cables together, it will create a lot of hassle sorting through them later on. In order to avoid this, you will want to pack the cables with their appliances. You will also want to label or mark all of the cables so that they are easily identifiable. This should be done irrespective of whether or not they are packed with the appliances.
Drain the dishwasher and washing machine
Before moving, you will need to drain your washing machine and dishwasher. The best way to do this is to disconnect the hoses a few days before the move and let the machines drain out into a drain or sink overnight.
Don't leave anything unattended
On the day of your move, you will need to ensure that you don't leave anything unattended on the street or in a place where it is easily taken. It may seem tempting to leave your car door or boot open when you are coming back to put something else in soon, but it is not worth the risk. A few minutes is more than enough time for someone to take something that is unattended. You will also want to make sure not to leave anything behind as that can also easily be taken.
