Packing in the Right Order when Moving Home

It is important that you pack everything in the right order when moving home. Knowing what order everything needs to be packed in requires both knowledge and personal judgement. If you were to pack in the wrong order, you may end up making more work for yourself. Learn when to pack each of your belongings in this guide.

When to start

Packing should start as early as possible to get it out of the way. There are some complexities to this, however. When you start packing, you should only pack the things that are not needed before the move. In the summer this would include things such as winter clothes and ski gear. All of the things that fit this criterion should be packed as soon as possible to reduce the workload when packing everything else.

Additionally, you have things that need to be done before you start packing. The most important of these is to sort your home contents. This means going through everything and picking out anything that you no longer have a use for or that you don't want. Once you have gone through your entire home contents, you will want to either sell, donate, or throw away the items that you want to get rid of. This will reduce the amount that you will have to pack, so it must be done first.

You will also want to go out and purchase any packing materials and equipment that you may need. This should include the following: boxes; durable tape; markers; and protective packing material such as bubble wrap. To ensure that you have enough of all of these, you should buy more than you will estimate you need.

To get your preliminary packing out of the way as soon as possible, you must take care of the precursory tasks as quickly as possible.

Order of packing

As discussed above, you will want to start your packing by packing the things that you won't need until after the move. The rest of the packing will be similar. It is recommended that you pack your belongings in order of how often they are used. Anything that is needed daily should be packed at the very end. You don't want to pack anything that you will need to get out later on before you've moved.

Separate bag

On a similar note, everyone in your household will need to pack a personal bag that will be kept separate from the boxes. This bag should contain anything that you will need on the day of your move or immediately after. Having recreational items such as books is also a good idea, especially if there is a long drive to the new home. The point of this bag is to ensure that you have easy access to anything that you may need.

You don't want to have to go through boxes on the day of your move to find your medication. Because you need easy access to their contents, these bags should be kept on the person of whoever they belong to.
