How to Pack Glasses when Moving Home

Packing glasses when moving house is requires a lot of care. You will need to ensure that you follow all steps of the process exactly to prevent any damage. You want all of your glasses to reach their destination in one piece. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to pack glasses for transport when moving home.

Reducing empty space

When moving, special attention should be paid to fragile items. Glasses are one such example. Fragile items will need to be packed in a way that stops them moving around. Because of this, when packing glasses, you will not only want to use packing materials such as newspaper (we will discuss this later), you will also want to pack them in smaller boxes that won't leave much empty space. On top of this, it is recommended to line each box with a folded towel. This will reduce the empty space even further.

Sorting the glasses

Before packing, you should take out all the cups that require packing and sort them by type. It is important to do this in order to pack them all neatly. This will reduce the number of boxes you will have to deal with, aswell as keeping the glasses safe. During this, you will also be able to get rid of any glasses that you don't want to keep, further reducing the workload.

Packing material

Like in a store, you will want to fill and surround the cup in crumpled up paper or some other packing material. This way the glasses will be cushioned whenever the box moves around. If using paper, don't wrap it in a way that hugs the glass too tightly. The point of crumpling the paper is to allow some give that will be used to absorb any impact. If the glasses are packed too tightly, they will absorb any impact that is applied to the box, putting them at risk of breaking. The material inside of the glass however, should be packed as tightly as possible, as it is designed to brace the sides of the glass against any impact that the packing material does not absorb. You will want to make sure that you also put packing material in the bottom of the box and between every layer of glasses. When the box is full, place a final layer of packing material and another towel.

Packing wine glasses

Packing wine glasses and glasses with a handle is more complex than packing regular glasses. With such glasses, you will also have to ensure that the handle or stem is protected properly. The handle or stem should be wrapped more densely so that it lines up with the wrapping on the rest of the glass. this will prevent cases where one part of the glass is able to move more than the rest of it. If that were to happen, it would put stress on the point between the moving and the unmoving parts, risking a break or fracture.
