Packing your belongings when moving home can be a complex task. Knowing how to make the process easier will make a big difference. You will also avoid any issues that can result from poor packing. Learn how to pack your belonging for moving house in this handy guide.

Here are some tips:

1. Start going through your belongings early. Ideally at least 6 weeks before the move.

2. Work out what you are doing with things you don't want to keep. If anything is going to charity, schedule a time to drop it off and book a trailer if needed.

3. Leave packing things that you use daily until the very end. You don't want to have to go through boxes every time you need something.

4. Update your new address with any services that need it, as soon as possible.

5. Label each box with its contents and the room that it belongs to. These should be clearly written and easy to see at a glance.

6. Use labels to let movers know if a box is fragile, heavy, or needs to be kept a certain way up.

7. Make a list of what each box contains and number them. This will prevent anything from going missing.

8. Prepare a personal bag containing everything that you will need during the move. You won't have access to anything that's packed away in boxes.

9. Before purchasing boxes, check if you have other suitable containers such as suitcases or large bags. These will need to be transported anyway, so you may as well use them.

10. Clothing can be transported inside of dressers and drawers.

11. Heavy-duty trash bags can be used to pack any clothes that are on coat hangers.

12. Remove the lids of any gels and liquids you are transporting. Cover the openings with plastic wrap before you put the lids back on. This will prevent any leaking.

13. If you have powder cosmetics, place a ball of cotton on top, inside the container. This will keep powder intact during transport.

14. Pack heavy items on the bottom of boxes and lighter items on top. This will stop anything from being crushed and avoid the box becoming top-heavy.

15. Put heavy items, like books, in smaller boxes. Filling large boxes with heavy items may make the boxes difficult to carry. At times this can even be dangerous.

16. If you have any fragile items, they must be cushioned in the boxes using packing material such as bubble wrap.

17. Bubble wrap is a great solution, but newspaper is just as effective. Make sure to scrunch it up to make it effective. Clothes can also be effective in certain cases.

18. Plates are less likely to be damaged when they're packed side to side.

19. Furniture may be difficult to carry due to weight or size. Dismantling furniture before transport can help with this.

20. Keep track of cords and cables by placing them inside individual plastic bags. These bags should be labelled. Alternatively, you could tape the cord to its hardware.

21. Take photos of how your electronics are set up before unplugging any cables.
